Don't drink the water?

Man, who else has noticed the funky smell coming from the tap in NYC for the past 8 months or so? The taste is also quite noticeable!

This, at a time when Mayor Bloomberg has been bragging about the City's fabulous tap water... encouraging residents that it's not at all necessary to purchase bottled water since NYC has such clean water for free.

So, Mr. Know-it-All, is it "clean" 'cuz they're adding tons of chlorine? That's definitely one of the foul smells that has permeated the taps (this year) in my opinion. It also has a bit of "rotten egg" smell; totally grosses me out! I don't wanna shower or brush my teeth with that crap :-(

Please let me know who else smells it -- What are your thoughts?

Hi All,

There's an ex-sloper in here- me! I used to live on 8th Ave and 9th St.

So, my question is, does anyone know if the same canadian guy was selling trees this year on 5th Ave and 9th Street?

I remember seeing him every year and it brings back good memories!

This is a repost for my next door neighbor:

Hello friends. It has been a fun adventure in NYC,
> but it looks like it is time to move on. I will
> mostly likely moving out of state, and would like to
> pass my great apartment deal on to someone who needs
> it/would appreciate it. Please help me find a good
> tenant for my roommate Emily!
>
> I've put a lot of heart and soul into this
> apartment,
> and hope its next occupant will love it as much as I
> have. I've painted every single room except one,
> redone the kitchen floor, re-upholstered the chairs,
> and much more. It is move-in ready! The
> neighborhood
> is great, and I've loved living here...
>
> to see pictures:
>
> $825 - sunny bedroom in south park slope
>
> the room:
> -very large room (approximately 14 x 15) in a 2br in
> south park slope (prospect ave b/t 8th ave and
> prospect park west)
> -available as early as october 1st but would be
> willing to work with any date up to november 1st for
> the right person
> -room is in front of apt, south-facing, with 3 large
> windows
> -closet space: you will have 1 of 2 closets in the
> living room; there is also a shared front hall/coat
> closet, and other storage
> -painted a pretty light green
>
> the furniture:
> -this apartment/room is perfect for someone with not
> a
> lot of stuff or someone just moving to new york
> -ideally, i would like to sell my furniture to the
> person moving in for cheap!
> -i picked out all the furniture for this room, so it
> all fits beautifully and looks pretty nice, if i do
> say so myself
> -prices negotiable, but amazing deals to be had if
> you
> take it all!
>
> the apartment:
> -2nd floor walk-up (3 story building)
> -prospect park and subway just 2 blocks away! (15th
> street stop on the F line)
> -share bath (shower with small tub)
> -furnished living room separating bedrooms
> -fully stocked, small, but very functional kitchen
> -dsl but no tv hooked up currently
> -there is a phone (land-line) now, but only with
> local
> service
> -laundromat/99 cent store/good pizza joint on the
> corner
> -great bagel place 1 block away
> -wonderful neighbors
>
> the numbers:
> -$825/month, plus 1/2 utilities (gas, electric, and
> dsl/phone - about $70)
> -one month security deposit
> -the lease will probably be month-to-month, but is
> tbd
>
> the requirements:
> -non-smoker, no drugs, easy on the alcohol
> -no pets
> -clean but not crazy
> -considerate, responsible, and polite
>
> the roommate (emily):
> -26 year-old female
> -very nice
> -easy-going, works at the brooklyn botanical gardens
> -plays the guitar and banjo!
>
> Please email me at knmetcalf@yahoo.com. The sooner,
> the better. If this isn't for you, please forward
> on
> to anyone who you think might be interested...
>

Gal from Cali looking for a summer sublet in NY!

Hi there,
Artist/writer/alternative healer & world traveller chick- currently residing back in the old hometown of L.A. is looking for a cool, clean, somewhat pleasant/decent and CHEAP summer sublet in NY.
Would ideally like to find something for two to three months, as close to the $4-500 range (though cheaper would be even better!) as I'm going to probably keep my place here too in the meantime...
What you may not be able to find or learn through my profile here on Tribe, I can fill in here: I'm CLEAN! (looking thus also for a clean place/space or roommates if this would be a share situation...) I'm open/friendly, responsible, courteous and conscientious, respectful and relatively quiet. (Also partial to the same qualities again, if the situation would be shared.)
Any decent if not great, clean/pleasant/harmonious place that I can call home for the summer months while in NY would be fantastic!
Look forward to hearing from you!!!!
And thanks for your help~
S.

Let's talk restaurants. Any favorites out there in Park Slope?

I can't say I've been to a whole slew of them, but I'd have to say that 12th Street (on 8th avenue) is pretty darn good for the price. They have a really nice Crusted Salmon with velvety mushroom ravioli.

Blue Ribbon is mad expensive, but I L-O-V-E their Chocolatechip Bread pudding. Their oxtail dish isn't bad either.

Long Tan seems to be the only worthwhile Thai rest. in the area.

Looking forward to trying Al di La soon. Okay, that's it from me. Hope to have you guys chime in.

50 degrees and sunny, can it get better than this? actually, yes it can.

ok people. I just got up at 7am and rode my lazy ass all the way around the park. And Ill tell you this much.... 7am is not early enough to beat the humidity. And GOD DAMN that hill at Grand Army Plaza. That was probably my wheezing that woke you up this morning.

Im going to the south of france in one month and I need to get my ass into some sort of shape. I'll be seeing the Tour De France so I figure biking is a good way to go. Im gonna do a couple mornings as a week and maybe a couple evenings with a couple beers afterward.

Anyone have any interest in joining, let me know. I could use someone to verbally abuse my ass up that hill.

$3 Scallions

Where does Terrace Bagels on Prospect Park West and 16th get off charging $3 to put scallion cream cheese on your bagel? And that's in addition to the 1.25 for the bagel, making it damn near 5 bucks for a bagel and cream cheese.

So I ordered a bagel with regular cream cheese, tomato, cucumber, and onion and it was $2.75.

That is seriously one expensive scallion. I wonder if it gives you oral sex when you get home.

Bus Trip to a Beer Festival!

Hey tribesters-

I would like to extend an invitation to you all -

I am running a bus trip from Bierkraft in Brooklyn, to a wonderful beer festival called "Belgium Comes To Cooperstown" at the Ommegang Brewery. It will involve 30 American breweries, and 10 Belgian importers, all belgian style beers, plus Belgian-American food (frites, waffles, mussels, etc), live music, etc.

For more info on the event, check out www.ommegang.com.

The bus we have hired is a luxury mini-coach, complete with TVs, restroom, and luggage space for the goodies you bring back. Tickets are $150, and include transportation, the festival ticket, and a gourmet Bierkraft breakfast.

If you are interested, send me a private message, or visit bierkraft.com and call us!

I, too, am new. Green, green like the sprouting leaves in spring!

I, too, am a 11238, but consider myself eligible since I am a card-carrying member of the co-op. In fact, I moved to the area to be near the place. I am from California, so I am a TOTAL organic food snob. Like ohmigwad!

I'm down for bike rides, picnics, poetry, designer coffee, stanky bars, trendy bars, candy bars.

I'm going out of town soon (boo) but I will be back in a few weeks for the time for the mind-numbing heat (Yay!).

Peace y'all!

Coming home from work, I took the R train to Union St. today and discovered the Park Slope Coop walking on my way to 7th Ave. Does anyone know about this place? I got to the register with a basket of food and the hippie at the scanner asked for my membership and I was like, "wha?" Apparently you need to take a two hour orientation. Are there fees? Do you have to work there to shop there?

The prices are so reasonable! Quarts of grass fed cow milk: 1.44! Organic lemons: 24 cents! Bars of oatmeal soap: 1.08!
